3 things to consider before getting a nose job

by Brianna Crane | August 4, 2026

If you’ve been thinking about Rhinoplasty (a nose job)—for functional or aesthetic reasons—there are a few things to consider beforehand.

  • Dr. Jewel Greywoode from CEENTA Uptown recently shared his expertise around this popular procedure. Here’s what he shared with Scoop.

What are medical reasons for a rhinoplasty versus cosmetic reasons?

From a functional perspective, the purpose of the nose is to warm, humidify the air we breathe as it passes through our nose to enter our lungs. Surgery can be helpful to restore the function.

  • Surgery can address crookedness of the nasal bones, narrowness of the cartilage along the middle and tip of the nose, as well as collapse of the cartilage when breathing in.

From a cosmetic perspective, the goal of rhinoplasty would be to change the shape of the nose with the goal of achieving a more aesthetic pleasing appearance.

Are there any unexpected symptoms a nose job can fix? In other words, could your nose be causing more issues than, say, breathing?

Because the primary function of the nose is breathing, and structural issues related to breathing are corrected with surgery, functional rhinoplasty is only expected to address breathing.

  • If other symptoms, such as snoring, mouth breathing, reduced sinus infections occur, these might be coincidental.

If you’re interested in a rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, is there a minimum age? At what point do you fully grow into your features?

Because rhinoplasty involves nasal structures thought to involve facial growth, it is crucial to ensure that facial growth has stabilized. Each surgeon is different in how they determine this point.  In my practice, as a general rule, age 16 (female) and 17 (male), assuming an average growth curve would be the minimum age.
