What Exactly Is a Mommy Makeover?

Were you as surprised as most moms that the pain associated with childbirth diminished fairly quickly? Many of us can barely remember the pain of childbirth afterward, and are more than willing to undergo it to have our beautiful babies.

However, many of us still carry some of the baby weight, the loose skin, tummy muscle separation, sagging breasts, and scars from a c-section. It can be a challenge to get your pre-baby body back, as the mirror reminds us every day 🙂 Small sacrifice to have our little bundles of joy, yes, but not one you have to live with if you don’t want to.

While the name is kind of cutesy, the process of a Mommy Makeover is legit. One of the most popular surgical procedures, the classic Mommy Makeover involves a combination of a tummy tuck (aka abdominoplasty) and breast surgery.  Breast surgery can be a Breast augmentation, Breast augmentation with a breast lift (Mastopexy) or a Breast Reduction.

There are lots of variations within that framework, however. Dr. Joel Beck of BECK AESTHETIC SURGERY explains that for the tummy, you may get a mini tuck, a full tuck, or a skin-only tuck, where lax skin is cut and fixed, but the abdominal muscles do not need to be cut and tightened. For your breasts, there’s a breast lift only, lift with augmentation, reduction, reduction with augmentation, or just augmentation.

How to Decide What to Makeover

Every Mom Bod is different, and Dr. Beck’s approach to a Mommy Makeover is all about the patient’s personal journey.  The surgical plan Dr. Beck makes with you is custom-tailored, developed in one-on-one consultation and discussion. This attention to detail means your consultation could take up to an hour, because Dr. Beck does not want you to leave without having all your questions answered.

The classic Mommy Makeover starts with the Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck). Post pregnancy, patients can experience a separation of their abdominal muscles (Diastasis Recti) which causes the abdomen to protrude. Patients may also have excess skin and fat. Dr. Beck performs a range of Tummy Tuck techniques including Corset Trunkplasty and Fleur de Lis. These techniques are often used for patients who have lost a lot of weight post-pregnancy, as they offer improved results compared to a traditional abdominoplasty.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding also take a toll on the breasts, which often lose volume in addition to sagging. Other women retain a good bit of their breast fat and are left with much larger breasts than pre-pregnancy. Both situations can be addressed.

The beauty of a Mommy Makeover is that two or three procedures are combined into one surgery. This reduces the surgical fees, the number of times you undergo anesthesia, and the time for recovery.

When to Have Your Procedure

First and foremost, it’s recommended that you wait until after you are finished having children. Dr. Beck recommends that you schedule your consultation for a minimum of 3 months after you have finished breastfeeding your last child. You need to give yourself a chance to fully recover from the hormonal, emotional and physical changes experienced during pregnancy and childbirth.

“After pregnancy and breast feeding, the best thing you can do is rest, eat well, move your body and give yourself time. Once it’s time, receiving a makeover is a fantastic way to improve the appearance of your stomach and breasts.”

Will You Lose Weight? Will You Lose Sizes?

Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss option, and Dr. Beck believes patients should be in optimal physical health with a BMI under 30. While you will lose a few inches and have a flatter, tighter belly, you will likely only lose a few pounds. A breast reduction can significantly decrease your breast size, and adding liposuction of the bra roll area may help as well.

Liposuction may also be recommended to help contour the love handles and waist area for you to have the best possible results with your abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck). Dr Beck will discuss the best options with you as he does for each individual patient.

What’s Unique About a Mommy Makeover at Beck Aesthetic Surgery?

Dr. Beck and the team at Beck Aesthetic Surgery don’t just have your results as their goal; your safety is their first priority. Dr. Beck says “Safety First. Results are #2,” and their process is designed with patient safety in mind. You will have your blood labs done to be sure you don’t have any issues that would interfere with either surgery or recovery. Low iron levels, for example, common among busy women and moms, impede healing and will need to be addressed prior to surgery. If you are over 35, you will have a mammogram to make sure your breasts are clear. And you will definitely stay overnight in recovery, so that the staff can be sure you are resting safely, are very well-hydrated, and are visited by the doctor in the morning to be discharged. Safety First!
