Getting To Know “Sugaring”.
Two New L.A. Bikini Studios Open This Week in Charlotte

This week, two L.A. Bikini studios will open in Charlotte, one in South Park / Park Towne Village on Monday, 1/13 off Woodlawn Road – near Total Wine and one on Monday, 1/20 at the Arboretum – across from Regal Cinema.

What Is L.A. Bikini?

L.A. Bikini are full-service hair removal studios, where unlike waxing they uses a technique call “Sugaring” which is practiced by only licensed cosmetologists and estheticians who have undergone extensive training using proprietary techniques. The concept started in Alabama and was created by a Massage Envy franchisee.

Ok, So What Is Sugaring?

Sugaring is an all-natural way to remove hair and provides greater comfort, especially for those with sensitive skin. A sugar paste (that you could literally eat, if you were so inclined and not on a low carb diet) is used instead of hot wax. It is completely natural, water-soluble and 100% free of harmful chemicals. The process requires no heat, is performed at body temperature, and removal is in the natural direction of hair growth (in contrast to waxing).

Why Sugaring vs Waxing?

First, while the heat factor in waxing doesn’t bother everyone, it does bother some, and sugaring is a cool/body temp paste applied. So there’s that off the table. A real plus if you have sensitive skin.

Also, the sugar paste can be applied to larger areas than wax, so it can be a faster process. And, unlike wax, the sugar paste can be re-applied to areas that need it, to get missed hairs. It’s also water-soluble, so any remnants are easily washed off.

Users report fewer ingrown hairs with sugaring, apparently since it only removes the hair follicle ~ unlike wax which removes that plus surrounding skin cells, leaving you open to a greater risk of ingrowns.

Users also report slower regrowth with sugaring.

I mean that alone….

Per the L.A. Bikini folks, “sugaring can eliminate and prevent ingrown hair, treat skin problems ranging from keratosis and eczema to psoriasis, and improve skin tone and texture. Because it’s natural and gentle, sugar paste hair removal works without burning your skin, damaging cells, scarring, or promoting cross-contamination.”

But Does It Still Hurt Like A Mother?

Most users find it much less painful than waxing, for a few reasons:

Sugaring doesn’t adhere to live skin cells like wax, which rips off both skin and hair when removed. When the sugar paste is removed, it only exfoliates dead skin cells.

Sugar paste hair removal also removes hair in the natural direction of growth, which is purported to be less painful than going in the opposite direction of growth as waxing does.

However, if you’ve never been waxed before, like you’ve just been shaving, then this is going to hurt more that that. But probably less than waxing. Bottom line, everyone’s tolerance for pain is different, but people report less pain with sugaring than with waxing.

L.A. Bikini has Memberships

Because hair removal is an ongoing need for most customers, L.A. Bikini offers special member discount pricing, which is pretty cool.
