The Nose Knows. Shopping the Latest Perfumes and Scents at Neiman Marcus.

I don’t know about you, but I lived through the 80s which were the heyday of strong, aggressive fragrances (remember Giorgio?!). For years afterward, I loved the idea of wearing fragrance, but just couldn’t find one that I could commit to–one that wasn’t overbearing, too fruity, or too sweet. Thank goodness there are a whole new crop of very sophisticated, complex and more wearable fragrances out there–and of course, the best of the best are to be found at Nieman’s. Here are a few of my favorites.

POlmsted & Vaux Bottle Eau de Parfum, 1.7 oz./ 50 mL
$88.00

Phlur Fragrances is the new kid on the block designed without a host chemical agents like BHT, parabens and phthalates–the scents are modern and fresh and packaged in eco-friendly but luxurious packaging. Another genius move is that each scent is categorized by weight (light-heavy) and they have a sampling pack where you choose three to try for only $18.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Silver Eau de Parfum, 2.4 oz./ 70 mL
$225.00

Maison Francis Kurkdijan’s Gentle Fluidity is yet another distinctive scent with floral notes, vanilla and musk that is meant to be gender neutral.

Atelier ColognePacific Lime Eau de Parfum, 3.4 oz./ 100 mL
$135.00

Atelier Colognes are some of my personal favorites and can be mixed to customize the fragrance to suit the wearer’s personality and season. This one is a fresh take on citrus softened with coconut and woody notes.

Byredo La Sélection Valentine Eau de Parfum, 6 x 12 ml $220.00

Airline travel is not usually something you associate with positive olfactory memories, but this is exactly how I found Byredo–my flight attendant smelled so good that I had to ask. This set is the perfect way to discover your favorite–and are easy to pack for getaways.

GivenchyL’Interdit Eau de Parfum, 2.7 oz./ 80 mL

Givenchy’s reboot of L’Interdit their classic fragrance from 1957 is both floral and woody, with dark notes of patchouli and vetiver.

Guerlain Le Parfum du 68 Eau de Parfum Spray, 2.5 oz./ 74 mL
$260.00

Guerlain is a classic french fragrance house (remember Shalimar?) that always has something distinctive for you to try–this one is both floral and woody, evoking a walk down the Champs-Elysee.

Miu MiuL’Eau Rosée Eau de Toilette, 1.7 oz./ 50 mL

Miucci Prada’s Miu Miu is laden with lily of the valley and wild musk and is fun and flirty.
