The Malbec grape first came to prominence as the “the Black Wine of Cahors.” Grown in southwest France, where it was known as Cot, these dark, thick, structured wines were all the rage in the English courts of the Middle Ages. As Bordeaux became the dominant center for French wine, Malbec wines were also shipped in to help add color and structure to the lighter Bordelaise wines.
In 1852, Michel Aime Pouget was hired by Domingo Sarmiento, then President of Argentina, to begin the first university level program for agricultural engineering in Mendoza, Argentina. Miguel quickly discovered that Malbec had a wonderful adaptation to the desert environment in Mendoza and that’s how Malbec found its true home in Mendoza, Argentina.
