Time for scoopthelake’s first annual Interior Design Trends editorial.
Last year the mid-century modern furniture rushed back into our lives (thanks to the popularity of Mad Men) accompanied by brass, emerald green and – who can forget it – chevron. Trends create an ebb and flow between dark and light, silver and gold, modern and traditional. As in fashion, it’s important to find your own style and then add in a trend or three. The cold weather has kept us cooped up in our digs, maybe it’s time for a little transformation.
I’ve done my research, which means I have consulted Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Southern Living. The trends found for 2014 are:
Honey Toned Woods, The color Blue, Stylish Outdoor Rooms, Vintage, Corduroy, Hides & Hairs and The Pantone Color of the Year.
Honey Toned Woods – these blond and naturally light woods make interiors crisper and even feel larger. “Be gone heaviness!” The glowing warmth of these woods makes a nice neutral backdrop for just about any color.
The Blues – were all the rage at the High Point Market. Paint the walls, wallpaper the ceiling, recover the chairs, accessorize in ALL shades of blue. Mix them up and layer them. Bonus: blues really compliment the honey-toned light woods.
Stylish Outdoor Room – moving the comfort and style outside. This is about putting the same thought and effort into the outdoor living space as you do in creating your indoor living space. A comfortable chair, throw pillows, beautiful side tables and interesting accessories. Don’t be afraid to move your inside furniture out if the weather looks promising.
Hides and Hairs – last year we saw hide rugs make their way into the showrooms. They’re still here and they brought friends…..chairs, ottomans, accessories, pillows, purses
Pantone’s Color of the Year – Pantones Official Color for 2014 is Radiant Orchid – opposite the color wheel from last years Emerald Green, but I actually think they look good together (thank goodness). A little purple goes a long way (my opinion) so just a dash in the right place is perfect.
Corduroy Upholstery – casual, durable and soft to the touch. Corduroy finally gets her turn on the dance floor. She’s been upstaged by chenille and velvet all these years. Upholster a pair of club chairs or a sofa or an ottoman.
Vintage – one of a kind finds that beg the question, “where did you find that?†Emphasis on the recycle and reuse trend. Items with a story or back ground. Unique pieces sourced uniquely.
