The Inside Scoop on Fern

Neighborhood: Plaza Midwood (1323 Central Ave.)

Scene: At first, you’ll feel as if you’re walking into a spa. But soon after, you’ll take in a whiff of fresh herbs and spices, and you’ll know otherwise. The space is bright and earthy, featuring natural accents like wood tables and wicker chairs, a gorgeous mason jar light fixture and a vertical indoor garden.

Offerings: A purely vegetarian menu with tons of vegan and gluten free options. Its brunch, lunch and dinner menus pay homage to comfort food via vegetarian substitutes. Yep. That’s right. “Chicken” and Waffles, Smoked Mushroom “Bacon,” and Quinoa Benedict for the mid-day fare followed by hearty dinner options such as Squash Blossom Hush Puppies, Red Chile Tempeh Tacos and lighter bites like the Daily Bruschetta or fresh Quinoa Salad. Oh, a majority of Fern’s produce is sourced from local farmers and the to die for gluten free biscuits are made in-house. Currently, Chef Drew Trepanier is making a vegan pumpernickel. Not too shabby!

Sips: Just about any Kombucha variety you can imagine (along with locally brewed Lenny Boy). Add a little liquor and you’ve got one of the most unique concoctions out there- a Kombucha Cocktail. And of course, there’s always beer and wine if you’re not willing to venture into the world of fermented teas.
