So begins our series on the Indie Food scene in Charlotte. We’ll be chatting up not just the un-chain spots, but the local food biz and places you may not have even heard about. We’re starting at breakfast, most important meal of the day, with a new local gourmet donut company which delivers every weekend, Fridays thru Mondays. Meet YOUR MOM’S DONUTS.
Your Mom’s Donuts is a Farm to Table donut delivery service owned by culinary couple Benjamin Frye and Courtney Buckley. YMD uses NC organically grown flour, pastured dairy and eggs to craft their tasty hand forged donuts. Flavors change weekly and in accordance with the season, and the donuts are square shaped, light and lightly glazed. Then topped with some amazing flavor combos, like the caramelized banana with pecan oat brittle, the chocolate glazed with sea salt and the strawberry preserves and almond butter cream delivered to our house today.
These are “regular” donuts, not “cake” donuts, but much more like a french pastry than familiar chain circular donuts. In fact, the chocolate glazed tasted pretty much like a chocolate eclair without the custard filling. They are not nearly as sugary sweet as chain d’s, and also without that weird “I-just-coated-my-mouth-with-delicous-lard” aftertaste. So if you order them for home delivery as a treat for your family one weekend, just make sure the kids understand these are “special” donuts without much in common with KK or DD, including their shape!
While not every weekend merits a delivery of “special” donuts at $24 a dozen, these would be perfect for when you have a birthday or anniversary, house guests, coffee with friends, or brunch/daytime party to go to. I would totally bring a dozen to the upcoming Queen’s Cup tailgate. They could easily work for high tea {the next time you are serving that your ladyship}. Or dessert.
To order, you just visit the website and email on the contact form. You will receive an email reply with that week’s flavors on Tuesdays and can reply back to place your order. As long as they get your order by 5 pm the evening before, you’ll get your order the next morning on Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday. Pretty soon you’ll be able to shop their store in Matthews, so stay tuned for more scoop!
