What to Wear to Madama Butterfly, the Opera.

January 11, 2012

If there were ever an event where we needed advice on What To Wear…it’s to the Opera.  Mostly the hubs won’t go, preferring football on TV.  But Madama Butterfly is surely the world’s most popular opera, and it is coming here to Opera Carolina in the Belk Theater on January 21, 26 – 29.

Read all about the story of Madama Butterfly and how to get your tickets at the Opera Carolina site here. And check out the Gowns To Wear from our local gala experts at Nitsa’s and C A P I T O L.

Just in case you don’t think of Nitsa’s as the perfect resource for black tie and gala gowns, the snaps below should jog your memory. Nitsa’s neighbors Our Place and Cafe Monte in the newish Allen Tate building next to Phillips Place on Fairview Road, and their gown selection is gorgeous. Well known across the state for their bridal business, Nitsa’s should be on the shopping list for anyone who’s looking for long or short in classic style.  As a rule, The Opera is an event to which people still wear long, although I’ve heard you can wear a dressy short or tea length as well.

NOTE – A few new short styles added from Nitsa’s.  All priced under $500.   Pics HERE

COPLON’S – Phillips Place – has a wonderful collection of gowns also!

    Hello,
What would be a safe alternative if your budget will not allow you to purchase a gown for the opera? Thank you for any suggestions.

Hey Danielle! If you can buy something new-to-you, I would race over to either Divine Consign in South Charlotte, Sweet Repeats on East Blvd or Consign by Design on Providence Rd in Myers Park – all have a good selection of dressy dresses and all have a sale in play that makes their already low consignment store prices even lower. Or I would go to the Under $100 section of Petal with fingers crossed for good luck! They usually have great dresses under $100. Finally, if shopping your closet is the only option, which we totally have to do ourselves, a black skirt and your dressiest top/shoes/accessories will work.
And remember, not to sound like your mother or anything, but it’s going to the performance that really counts, not what you wear to it!! I know Opera Carolina and the performers would be happy to see you in jeans and a tee. :-)

I just want to thank you Susu for your suggestions. I shopped my closet and found something that I think will fit in perfectly. I am so excited!!!
