picture-1KK Bloom – a scoopcharlotte Sponsoring Store

The Selwyn Corners area of Myers Park is a newly happenin’ spot.  Yes, yes, the Selwyn Pub has always been smokin’ hot, and we do mean literally smoking.  But several new shops have opened here at the corner of Colony Rd and Selwyn Avenue and KK Bloom is one we never miss.  Perfectly placed right in between Yoforia and the mani-pedi salon, KK Bloom was opened in August of 2010 by Charlotte native Kendrick Allen.  Kendrick has been on the local retail scene for a while and has wanted her own shop since she was 5 years old.  She has the bases covered in KK Bloom – it’s an all occasion, all ages, range of prices kind of place.  Great inexpensive jewelry, hot accessories, lots of expected AND unexpected designers like Gypsy 05, Geren Ford, ADAM, Susana Monaco, Wink, Splendid, Ella Moss, The Addison Story, BCBG, abs, tolani, Isabel Lu, Luna, 2812, 81 Poppies, By Boe, David Aubry

City Art Works.  a scoopcharlotte Sponsoring Store.

City Art Works is one of Charlotte’s best kept shopping secrets.  From the name and the exterior in the strip shops at Park Towne Village (the Total Wine shopping center on Woodlawn in Myers Park), you might think this is an artsy crafts store with a Berkeley & Birkenstocks vibe.  There certainly is an appreciation for fine craftsmanship at City Art Works, but what is going to knock you out at this shop is the jewelry.  City Art Works presents a collection of the most popular, coveted, contemporary jewelry designers available in town.  These are the kind of pieces you will see in every mag on every model & celeb – on their casual days.  Owners Alan Goldstein and Susan Sloan-Lieb have cultivated relationships with many hard-to-get designers whose work is mid-priced artistry.  Susan can tell you an in-depth story about each jewelry designer and practically each piece of jewelry. Nothing is crazy over the top expensive, and everything is very hip, very good quality, and presented beautifully.  Find Coralia Leets, Waxing Poetic, Love Heals, Avindy, Ayala Bar and so many more jewelry designers here.  You will thank me for insisting you stop by.  (No applause needed.  Just send money.)

Consign by Design

Consign by Design is a great resource for the contemporary designer brands you know and love, like Trina Turk, Tibi, Nanette Lepore, DVF, Tory Burch, Susanna Monaco, and ABS,  as well as some you might not see much around the QC like  Yumi Kim, Trinity, and  Common Thread.  And CBD has probably the widest selection of consigned designer jeans in town….we can’t even name all the brands, but lots of sizes and washes.  Consign By Design is the only shop to carry a solid collection of formal gowns, from brands like Carmen Marc Valvo, Vera Wang, Roberto Cavalli, Robert Davies and Lela Rose.
Finally, tucked inside CBD is one of Charlotte’s few higher end Maternity Consignment shops, WOMB.  In a nutshell, while Consign By Design isn’t the largest shop space-wise, you will find a trip-worthy selection of consigned categories that you won’t find in other spots.

paul simon for women

The women’s store of Paul Simon is located on Providence Rd at Selwyn in the Myers Park shopping center.  The store divides its focus between women’s Executive, Casual and Evening attire.   The selection is upscale, classic and mature in all categories. This is where you’ll find a timeless piece which you will probably return to again & again….expensive but well worth it if their style suits you.   Brands include Zanella, Bernard Zins, Nina McLemore,  Maxmara,  Peserico,  Fabrizio Gianni,  Pink Tartan,  Nic & Zoe, CiCi Bianca, Cullen Sweaters, Cambio Jeans, WOMYN, Parameter, Tom and Linda Platt, Flores & Flores, Connie Roberson, Chetta B and Teri Jon.  Their custom made selection is almost never-ending, with over 100 colors of silk to create in a variety of styles.   This is a store that prides itself on personal customer service, almost like a fashion concierge.  Don’t be shy about availing yourself of this, it is the Paul Simon hallmark.

julie’s

Don’t be put off by the strip center exterior.     Julie’s has a nice range of low-priced, mid-style clothes that are easy to wear and easy on the wallet.  The selection seems to be divided within the store….in the front it’s younger and trendier.  To  the back, more “mature.”  There is a lot of practical, wearable style here, but you may have to look for it.  I saw several very cute raincoats for $38 (!!) and several “dresses” which would be too short and clingy for my regular wear but at $30 would make a perfect swim cover-up.  And keep your eye out, or ask inside.  Julie’s often has a great promotion going at the store.

Dilworth

corals-coral-logo1Coral – a scoopcharlotte Sponsoring Store

CORAL houses a collection of contemporary designers most of us only get to see in mags and shop for online.  Rachel Comey, Vena Cava, Thread Social, What Goes Around Comes Around, Camilla & Marc, Sass & Bide.  If you don’t know these names, don’t feel out of it.  Owner Sormeh Hafezi has made a point to seek out well-priced, well-made contemporary fashion that you won’t find at the boutiques you already shop here in Charlotte.  The price range is basically $200 – $800, with some shoes by Matt Bernson that are a style steal at $187.  Style-wise, the clothing, like the store itself, is modern, casually chic and unique.  And do-able.  While there are some fashion-forward looks, there is plenty for those of us who aren’t particularly trendy or 25.  Denim by SIWY, MiH, Blank, Genetic Denim.  And great fashion jewelry by Wendy Mink, Melinda Maria, Shashi, Heather Benjamin.  Scarves and wraps by Leigh and Luca.  Bags by jadetribe and moyna.  Again, refreshingly new and different.

ljj-logo-jpeg-2Laura James Jewelry – a scoopcharlotte Sponsoring Store.

Laura James, a local jewelry designer with work featured in Lucky & Elle and on Gossip Girl & The Today Show, has opened a studio shop next to Step at 1419 East Blvd. (above Sloan & icLondon).   While LJJ has been selling online for a while, we lucky Charlotteans can take advantage of a visit and consult with Laura herself.  Her studio is sunny and bright, and her designs are unique, semi-precious, not too pricey.  She uses vintage elements with gold plating and semi-precious stones to create one-of-a-kind pieces.  You will find new jewelry in the shop every day.  Literally, as Laura is creating and re-working new pieces in the studio within the shop each day.  And if you see something you like, but want it to be a bit different, Laura will customize and re-work any piece for you, including your own vintage, antique and other jewelry. The shop is truly a local “gem.”  Don’t miss out.

monarch_logomonarch – a scoopcharlotte Sponsoring Store.

A collaborative boutique is what this new upscale consignment shop calls itself. Collaborative with their clients, both consignors and shoppers, collaborative with local artisans and jewelers, collaborative with local fashion experts and with other neighborhood and local businesses.   Like the Happy Chair furniture you’ll find there, the owners of monarch bring a refreshing and unique style to Charlotte retail.  You’ll find well-known high-end designers, along with more approachable designers like DVF, Milly and the Carlisle Collection and some unexpected choices from folks like HOSS, development, and manoush.  Most items are barely, if ever worn.  The prices are good and the selection changes constantly.  Really, no piece is on the floor more than 60 days. Even the charming bungalow address for monarch at 1222 East Blvd. is part of a collaboration…the house is shared by Revolve Clothing, Charlotte’s only upscale men’s consignment shop.
